Kwang-Ju Son\u2019s gaze casts both herself and all of us into the currents of time and history. An artist\u2019s identity is formed in tandem with the context of the era to which she belongs. Therefore, at the foundation of her practice lies a constant questioning of what to see in the present moment and how to articulate it\u2014a process inseparable from reflection and introspection on both the self and the times.<\/p>\n

Exilandscape<\/a> (2025) presents the landscapes of exile sites on the Korean Peninsula. The quietly flowing contemporary image intersects with the gaze of a failed revolutionary from hundreds of years ago. The artist\u2019s inquiry into the \u201cfailed revolution\u201d leads to a sensibility that a spacetime severed from everything can become the beginning of yet another genesis. The act of making art is likewise a series of sustained decisions and attempts\u2014the product of a resistance that persists and repeats, even in the face of repeated failure.<\/p>\n

APPARITION<\/a> (2007) projects the shadow of a gondola onto an endlessly unfolding landscape. The scene, devoid of any special composition or deliberate point of view, appears at first glance peaceful and tranquil. The rounded form of the gondola even resembles a comfortable nest. Yet, accompanied by occasional roaring sounds, the gondola\u2019s shape repeatedly transforms in response to changes in its surrounding environment. This evokes the myriad possible states of being that arise from one\u2019s correspondence with the given world. These ceaselessly continuing scenes become a moment of contemplation: where does the driving force come from that compels us to move forward nonetheless?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
