Exilandscape

2024, Exp./Doc., HD, Color, Sound, 90:00

SYNOPSIS

Exilandscape, starting from the question of a “failed revolution,” focuses on the ‘sense of ruin’ that views the present time and space I am in as the ruins of a failed past, and seeks answers within the landscape.

Based on images of ruin and decay collected along the Samnamdaero, a major exile route in the Joseon Dynasty, stretching from Seoul to Haenam, Exilandscape reinterprets the exile route as a political and historical experiential space that starts from ruin and seeks a new beginning at the end of ruin.

Through this, instead of accepting the notion of a “failed revolution” as negative, we understand that regression and repetition are the fundamental attributes of revolution. By aiming to deviate from the mainstream and escape the conventional course of life to repeat a life that always fails, we realize that this can be an effort to rediscover the meaning of revolution (which is both art and life).
